3-D Castle Project

Mrs. Swinnerton's Class

St. Alphonsus ECS

Another activity that we completed was building our own 3-dimensional castles. We collected an assortment of cardboard boxes, paper towel rolls, milk containers, etc... and used these in unique ways, designing complex castles according to each child's individual vision.

To begin, each child took on the role of the architect, and was responsible for designing on paper the "blueprint" for their castle. Each student also colored in  their castle to give us  better idea of what colors etc... we would need to provide to help them complete their model.

The next two days were spent building the castles. After using endless amounts of tape and glue, the castles were primarily completed. The final day enabled the students to put on the finishing touches- tissue paper, construction paper, paint, markers, etc... to try to help the castle look more like their blueprint.

Fiona used tissue paper to create a ballroom dancing floor for her castle.

Mai-Thy decorated her towers using an assortment of different paint colors.

After creating a tissue paper moat, Myles started to paint the walls.

Some of the students learned very quickly that their initial design was causing great distress for the carpenters doing the actual building, and modified their plans accordingly. Others remained true to their original plan, and could see their vision in the end result (even if the rest of us could not!)

The Finished Products

As you can see, each castle used different materials and incorporated elements that were important to each child.
